Scanela ("we", "us") cares about your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use and protect your personal data in accordance with GDPR and Apple's guidelines.
1. What we collect
We collect the following data:
- Email address — to create and manage your account
- Saved recipes — stored in Firebase to sync between devices
- Pantry ingredients — stored in Firebase linked to your account
- Dietary preferences — stored locally on device and in Firebase
- Profile picture — stored in Firebase Storage if you choose to add one
- Recipe images — stored in Firebase Storage when you add images to recipes
- Language preference — stored locally on your device
- Photos for scanning — sent temporarily to Claude AI for analysis, NOT permanently stored
2. How we use your data
Your data is used to:
- Provide the app's features
- Sync saved recipes and pantry between your devices
- Generate recipe suggestions based on your ingredients
- Personalize recipe suggestions based on your dietary preferences
- Remember your settings
3. Third party services
We share data with the following third party services:
- Firebase (Google) — storage of account, recipes, pantry and images. Data stored in EU region
- Anthropic Claude AI — photos sent for ingredient analysis and recipe generation, not stored
- Spoonacular — ingredient list sent for recipe search, no personal data shared
- Unsplash — recipe name sent for image search, no personal data shared
We never sell your data to third parties.
4. Camera and photo library
Scanela requests access to:
- Camera — to take photos of fridge, ingredients and recipes. Photos are sent to Claude AI for analysis and not stored on our servers
- Photo library — to select images for saved recipes. Selected images are uploaded to Firebase Storage linked to your account
You can revoke these permissions at any time in your phone's settings.
5. Your rights (GDPR)
Under GDPR you have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your account and all data
- Object to processing of your data
- Data portability — receive your data in a readable format
- Withdraw consent at any time

6. Storage and security
Your data is stored securely via Firebase (Google Cloud) with encryption in EU region (Frankfurt). Photos you take for scanning are never stored on our servers — they are sent directly to Claude AI and deleted immediately after analysis. Images you add manually are stored encrypted in Firebase Storage.
7. Cookies and tracking
Scanela does not use cookies and does not track your behavior for marketing purposes. We do not collect analytics data about how you use the app.
8. Children
Scanela is not intended for children under 13 (16 within EU). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If we discover we have unintentionally collected data from a child we will delete it immediately.
9. Delete your account
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us at scanela.ai@gmail.com. We will delete all your data within 30 days including saved recipes, pantry, dietary preferences and any images.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
